When you ask Jim Love, owner and CEO of Floorscapes, which direction to install vinyl plank flooring, you’ll get an answer that leads to more questions. I know this because I asked him in order to write this blog. A number of elements come into play when deciding on the direction to install LVP or LVT.
More often than not, Jim uses one of two methods. First, the traditional method of running planks along the floor joists, front to back. Second, running the floor east to west. When natural lighting pours through the windows and entryways, you want the sunlight to work with the long seams of the planks. If you go north to south, the sunlight skips over every seam, drawing unwanted attention and resulting in a “stacked” appearance.
With that being said, every project is different. Here are a few factors to keep in mind.
Direction of the Floor in Adjoining Rooms
It’s important to know if you’re planning to run LVP in just one room or throughout multiple. When running the flooring throughout multiple rooms, it’s typically best to continue the floor in the same direction as the previous room.
Features of the Room
Features of the room, such as fireplaces, islands, or entryways/walkways, You don’t want to walk into a house and immediately notice that something is offset. Plan the flow of the room and go with what feels natural.
Dimensions of the Planks
It’s also important to consider the length and width of the product you select. For example, some products come in 6-foot versus 4-foot planks. When working in a small room with long planks, running the planks along the longest wall of the room is likely to be the best bet without making the room feel smaller.
Plan the LVP Installation
Remember, every project is different. At the end of the day, it’s crucial to plan the LVP installation. Lay the planks down to get a visual before committing.
