Floor Prep: Why Does it Matter?

We’re going to level with you (pun intended), floor prep isn’t glamorous and unless you are flooring dweebs like us, the grand reveal of flooring prep isn’t that gratifying. However, it is a non-negotiable.

Think of floor prep as a “you’ll thank me later” means to an end of flooring installation. Some flooring materials are more forgiving than others, but without a good foundation, a flooring installation is going to fail eventually. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Here are the necessities of floor prep.

Clean is the Bare Minimum

Ensuring the surface is clean before laying down a new floor might seem like a given. You’d be shocked to see what’s underneath the floors that we remove from kids’ toys to leftover nails and adhesive. What’s left behind can lead to floor gaps separating, locking system failure, floor buckling, and more.

Moisture is Crucial

There are multiple reasons a floor and subfloor can have moisture problems whether it’s areas prone to moisture like a bathroom or the result of a leaky pipe. If moisture isn’t taken into consideration prior to installation, putting a new floor down can trap and grow mold. As a result, contaminating the air that you breathe daily.

Flat is the Goal

Getting every floor perfectly level is a floor-ists’ dream, but it’s not always feasible. We approach every project with the goal of a flat and smooth surface. Otherwise, weight doesn’t get distributed properly, locking systems of planks can fail, and manufacturer warranties won’t stand up. Plus, no one likes bouncy or squeaky floors.

Transitions are Key

Transitions provide a cohesive finished result, protects the floors integrity, allows for expansion gaps, and helps with future repairs if ever needed. Think of replacing carpet with LVP as an example. If not prepped, the change in elevation can lead to gaps under door casings, tripping hazards, or the need for 3/4” risers (no thank you).

Make Floor Prep a Priority

Do yourself a favor, if you’re installing the floor yourself, ensure floor prep is a priority. If you remove the current floor covering yourself and find yourself with a mess of a subfloor, fix the problem or find someone who can. If you’re hiring a flooring installation crew, ask the right questions. If you don’t know what questions to ask, call Floorscapes.

Our team at Floorscapes doesn’t tell you what you want to hear, we tell you the truth. When we quote a project, we price for a result that is best for the longevity of your floor, your home, and even your health. Most quotes don’t account for what’s actually under your floor, we do. After all, we have a reputation to uphold.
